Alberta Stillwater Adventures

where flyfishing adventures begin

About Us

Our guided trips are designed for those anglers wanting to fly-fish lakes, ponds and reservoirs.  We specialize in introductory stillwater fly fishing clinics by teaching you what is needed to become successful in the art, science, sport and passion that is fly fishing.

Our Mission

Fly-fishing stillwaters are both fun and relaxing.  Edmonton's local trout lakes offer anglers close-to-home convenience and exceptional opportunities when rivers are off-color or high due to spring runoff or foul weather. Our mission is to introduce new fly-anglers, fly-fishermen from out of town or new to the Edmonton area, to the numerous opportunities available to them at an affordable price. Through our clinics, we want to give every new fly fisher, the skills, tools and knowledge to be successful on their very next fly-fishing adventure.  New float tube or pontoon boat owners or someone wishing to try fly-fishing before making an inflatable boat or fly rod purchase are also more than welcome to book one of our services. Our intentions are not to wine and dine you, but to help you master the mechanics of casting, understand where fish are feeding, what flies to use and the techniques and tactics needed to be successful. But more importantly; to show you a good time.

Fly-fishing our local trout lakes can offer up huge trout and anglers booking a trip can expect good insect activity all day, usually resulting in a great time on the water.  Our local lakes are some of the most fertile lakes in Canada.  The muddy bottoms of our lakes make superb habitat for most stillwater aquatic life like chironomids, scuds and leeches.

Currently, we offer trips & clinics to several local trout lakes only 30-45 minutes from Edmonton. But we also offer several other fly-fishing opportunities not listed on our Rates & Services page including:

  • Stillwater fly-fishing for trophy size northern pike, day and overnight trips to some of Alberta's most productive stillwater fisheries for big trout, day and over night trips to the blue ribbon Little Smokey River for arctic graying with a chance at a bull trout and rocky mountain whitefish and evening trips on Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River fly fishing for Goldeye & Mooneye.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please ask for a quote.

Our History

Alberta Stillwater Adventures is a unique venture for Mike Monteith.  Mike had owned Santannas Night Club for over 15 years but his true passion has always been fly fishing stillwaters.

In 2002, Mike started guiding clients on Edmonton's local trout lakes. Today Mike stays busy teaching clients of all ages the mechanics of casting and unlocking the secrets to stillwater fly-fishing. After leaving the night club business, Mike spent some time as the manager of the north side Fishin' Hole in Edmonton and has became well known throughout Alberta and western Canada for his informative web site "Fly Fishing Edmonton".  Mike received his graduation certificate as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in the summer of 2007 and his Medical First Responder certification in 2014. He's been successfully fishing Edmonton's trout lakes for 39 years and will continue to fish them for many years to come. Alberta Stillwater Adventures respects and understands that you may want to keep a few fish according to your rights under the Alberta Fishing Regulations possession limits but in the same breath, we would like to teach anglers the importance of catch & release fishing through practice.
