What We Offer

One Day Introduction To Stillwater Fly Fishing Clinic

This 8 hour clinic takes place at Muir Lake only 35 minutes west of Edmonton; perfect for those new to stillwater fly fishing. Before entering the water, we'll go over fly rods, reels, lines, leaders & tippet as well as popular fly-fishing knots and how all of these work together. We'll also discuss stillwater entomology and the flies we use to represent these simple life forms.  Of course we'll show you basic casting instruction with our focus on teaching you controlled casts to 30ft.  And when we get on the water, we'll go over stillwater techniques and tactics, how to read a lake and popular methods used to catch fish.  If you're new to stillwater fly-fishing but are an experienced stream fisherman, we'll tailor make the clinic to meet your needs.

Two Day Introduction To Stillwater Fly Fishing Clinic

This two day clinic takes place at Muir Lake, a short drive west of Edmonton. Day one will feature an introduction to fly fishing tackle including rods, reels, lines, leaders, tippet and indicators. You'll then learn about aquatic entomology and the flies we use for imitation. We'll also spend time on popular fishing knots with the remaining time spent on the mechanics of casting and fishing from shore.  Day two will include a casting refresher, fly set-ups, how to read a lake & pontoon boat set-up and inflation. The rest of the day will take place in pontoon boats, on the water, going over techniques & tactics as we try and find trout. Our two day clinics leave a lot more time for fishing and your questions having you ready to be successful for your own stillwater adventure.

Chironomid Clinic

This clinic is specifically designed to help the intermediate to experienced fly angler unlock the secrets to fishing chironomids. Chironomids (midges) are the single most important food source for trout in productive stillwaters. During our eight hour, on the water clinic, we'll introduce you to chironomid entomology and fly selection as well as the different set-ups, tactics & techniques used to become successful in this style of fly fishing. We'll also discuss popular equipment and go over some advanced casting techniques to help you achieve distance while reducing knots and tangles when casting these rigs.

Fall Boatman & Backswimmer Clinic

The boatman & backswimmer migration that happens every fall on most North American lakes and ponds can be some of the best stillwater fly fishing of the season. Aimed at intermediate or experienced fly angler, this eight hour clinic will cover boatman and backswimmer entomology, popular patterns used for imitation, fly fishing rigs and set-ups, equipment and fly lines that consistently produce results as well as on the water techniques and tactics. The boatman & backswimmer clinic runs the 2nd week of September through to the 2nd week of October.

Choose Your Lake

One of Alberta's first quality fisheries, Muir is located about 30 minutes west of Edmonton and is our selected lake for our introduction to stillwater flyfishing clinics. Thanks to aeration, this lake was stocked with Rainbow Trout in May 2003.  Muir Lake is an enhanced fishery project and includes an education center explaining simple life forms and how trout feed on them as well as future plans for a casting platform.  The regulations at Muir are unique and put in place to give anglers high catch rates and a good chance at catching a trophy sized trout.  As of May 2008, Muir Lake has been stocked with triploid rainbow trout that can grow to trophy size in short order.

Chickakoo is a small lake that is stocked with both brook trout and rainbows.  The lake is surrounded by trees making this lake perfect for those new to fly casting as the wind doesn't show it's full force here, making casting a little easier.  The trout are on the smaller size but trips usually offer up good catch rates.

Star Lake is located about 45 minutes west of Edmonton and is one of my favorite lakes.  This lake is home to some larger Rainbows but is not known for high catch rates.  If you're looking for a challenge and a chance at a trophy trout, then this may be the lake is for you.
